Governor’s Travel Ban Prevented Large Number of Accidents in Hingham
Only two car crashes were reported in Hingham during the driving ban.
The Governor’s Travel Ban prevented chaos on Hingham roads during last weekend’s snowstorm.
Only two motor vehicle accidents were reported in Hingham during the storm, according to Hingham Police Sgt. Steven Dearth. Before the ban Friday, while snow started to pick up, five crashes were reported in just an hour from 1:30 p.m. -2:30 p.m., Dearth said.
Although the number of accidents was not high, Hingham Police did receive 89 storm calls for service, including wires down, disabled cars, vehicle crashes, trees/limbs down, well being checks/assist public.
While former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis, who was in charge of the commonwealth during the Blizzard of ’78, praised the governor’s move, others called the order “tyrannical” and say the strict ban and hefty fines were too much, according to The Globe.
