Hingham 2012 Election Guide: School Committee

A look at three candidates running for the two Hingham school committee seats. The election is Saturday, April 28 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

School Committee (3 Years) Vote for Two
Bernard Manning   59 Cushing Street
Dennis Friedman   445 Cushing Street
Paul Gannon   7 Sentinel Road

Bernard Manning  of Cushing Street, is a former teacher who is running for school committee.  Manning believes the school committee has been mismanaging business.  He believes the Hingham Middle School’s roof would have never collapsed back in the winter of 2010. He said if the school committee took notes from the Hingham Library and made sure the roof was shoveled, the roof would have never collapsed.

“Why was this dangerous condition allowed to continue when the Hingham Library examined building and hired snow shovelers?” Manning asked.

Paul Gannon of Sentinel Road  is from South Boston and he recently moved to Hingham a few years ago with his wife Susan, and his two daughters, Caroline 13 and Jacqueline 10 for the school system.

“One of the main reasons I moved down here is because of the school systems,” Gannon said.  “We came to love the Hingham public school system.”

Gannon never even intended to run but when he found out there were two opening he decided to give it a shot.

Gannon was very involved in public service in South Boston.  He is a college graduate of Providence College and graduated from Catholic University Columbus School of Law.

Dennis Friedman of Cushing Street moved to Hingham 30 years ago and his two children attended Hingham Public Schools  and graduated from Hingham High School.

“They were both well prepared for rigorous college academics and it’s my desire to do what I can to make the already very good program we have-event better.”

Friedman was a member of the Hingham Advisory Committee and was the liaison for the school committee and the school building committee.  In that time Friedman said he was happy to play a small role in the successful completion of the new East Elementary School which was constructed on time and under budget.
