East School Reader Wins Bike, Hingham Student Travels to China

The news in and around Hingham today.

1. The Great Books Discussion Group meets at the library twice a month, on the second and fourth Wednesdays, in the Fearing Room, from 10:15 to about noon.  They will meet Wednesday, August 14.

2. The Young Adult Book Group will meet at the Hingham Library at 6 p.m. today.

3. Four days after the Marathon bombings, Sean Bradley, Andrew Julian, Bobby Sullivan, Ryan Swanson, Peter Vargo and Samuel Vita of Hingham, together with 34 other members of the select Boston College High School Chamber Choir, were about to leave for a West Point concert tour, when the Boston lockdown in pursuit of the second 'Marathon Bomber' delayed all travel out of the city. Once the lockdown was lifted they set out from NY and arrived in Poughkeepsie at midnight and much to their surprise our boys found welcoming notes on their pillows saying 'Boston Strong.'

4. Dependable Cleaners is pleased to announce that Hingham student Nicole Joffe of the East School has won a new bike through its annual Read to Ride program. The program is designed to encourage student to keep up with their reading during the summer months. Students from ages 6-15 will have the chance to win a bike or an exciting prize for every book they read. Since the program’s inception in 1999, more than 61,000 books have been read.

5. Michael Cadigan of Hingham, a junior at Boston College High School, together with 11 other BC High students and under the guidance of faculty members Michael Gardner and Ms. Yi-ching Yang, recently participated in BC High's 12th annual Beijing Summer Seminar.
