NVNA and Hospice Diabetes Education Program Merits ADA Recognition

The prestigious American Diabetes Association (ADA) Education Recognition certificate for a quality diabetes self-management education program was recently awarded for continued recognition to the Norwell VNA (NVNA) and Hospice. The program was originally recognized in 2008. The ADA review and recognition process assures that approved education programs meet the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs. Recognition status indicates that knowledgeable health professionals provide state of the art information about diabetes management for program participants.

Norwell VNA (NVNA) and Hospice has clinicians who have participated in advanced study to become certified diabetes educators. They run diabetes self-management classes at various locations on the South Shore. Self-management education is an essential component of diabetes treatment. The educational program covers the diabetes disease process; nutritional management; physical activity; medications; preventing, detecting and treating acute complications and chronic complications through risk reduction; goal setting and problem solving; psychological adjustment; monitoring; and care and management before, during and after pregnancy.

Assuring high-quality education for patient self-care is one of the primary goals of the Education Recognition program, and one of the key reasons Norwell VNA and Hospice voluntarily participates in the review process. "This gives professionals a national standard by which to measure the quality of the services we provide," says Meg Doherty, CEO of NVNA and Hospice. "And it helps consumers identify quality programs."
