The Company Theatre to Hold Open Auditions for Les Misérables

The award-winning Company Theatre announces open auditions for their upcoming production of Les MisérablesChildren’s auditions (for the 3 youth roles) for ages 8 to 12, and small in stature, will be held Monday, May 12 at 4:00 pm.  Adult auditions will be held Sunday, May 18 at 1:00 pm.  Auditions are held at The Company Theatre Centre for the Arts, 30 Accord Park Drive, Norwell.  Book for Les Misérables is by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg, with music by Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer.   All roles are open for casting.  Call backs will be held on Monday, May 19 at 6:30 pm.  The production will be directed by Zoe Bradford and Jordie Saucerman, choreographed by Sally Forrest, with music direction by Michael Joseph.  Further information and a rehearsal schedule will be available at auditions. 

 

Epic, grand and uplifting, Les Misérables packs an emotional wallop that has thrilled 65 million people worldwide.   This epic award-winning pop-opera takes the audience through an epic tale of broken dreams, passion and redemption, against the backdrop of a nation in the grip of revolution.  In 19th century France, Jean Valjean is released from 19 years of unjust imprisonment, but finds nothing in store for him but mistrust and mistreatment. He breaks his parole in hopes of starting a new life, initiating a life-long struggle for redemption as he is relentlessly pursued by police inspector Javert, who refuses to believe Valjean can change his ways.  Based on Victor Hugo's classic novel, Les Misérables holds the record for the longest-running musical in the world and continues to thrill and captivate audiences around the world.

Character Descriptions and Vocal Ranges:

Jean Valjean – Male 35-40s. Sings to B (high lyric baritone or tenor with strong low notes). A poor peasant who rises to wealthy status, he has great natural nobility and dignity.

 

Javert – Male baritone, sings to G. Policeman who relentlessly hunts Valjean. The ultimate “law andorder” figure. Obsessed, to the point of irrationality, with a rigid moral code.

 

Thenardier – Male baritone, late 30s-40s, sings to F sharp.  Strong comic character role. A crooked innkeeper, later a petty, amoral thief. Greedy, irreverent, selfish, boorish, vulgar.

 

Marius – Male high baritone, 20s (sings to A) with a strong bottom range (to A). A member of the revolutionary student movement. Attractive and romantic, but sensitive.

 

Enjolras -  Male high baritone, 20s to early 30s, (sings to G sharp/A) very strong singer. Charismatic politicalfigure. Leader of the revolutionary movement.

 

Fantine – Female late 20s, early 30s. (belt up to C, sings to E flat). Poor factory girl, struggling to support her fatherless daughter. Later is a pauper, a prostitute, and a ghost. She should appear to be strong and a survivor.

 

Cosette – Female soprano, age 18-25 (sings to high C), a light, young “floating” sound. Fantine’s daughter (first seen as and played by a child) delicate, elegant, vulnerable and beautiful. Falls in love with and later marries Marius. Soprano (to high C)

 

Eponine – Female, big belt voice, to C in belt (sings to E flat). Daughter of the Thenardiers but in no way behaves like them. Fired by her love for Marius. Small and waif-like. Hasn’t learned to disguise her emotions; wears her heart on her sleeve.

 

Madame Thenardier – Female 30s to early 40s, belter. Tough, sharp, coarse, boorish, vulgar. Strong character comedienne role.

 

Ensemble

Auditioning a variety of ages, shapes, sizes, voices. Comedic and dramatic.

 

Youth

Gavroche - Boy, age 8 – 12 (or up to age 14 for small stature) Spunky street urchin. Lots of personality. Sings very well.

 

Young Cosette - Girl, age 7-11. Sweet and innocent, pretty soprano voice.

 

Young Eponine - Girl, age 7 - 11. Sweet and innocent, pretty.

 

Audition candidates should be strong singers, and arrive prepared to sing a song from the show in the show key, or a song in a similar musical theater style.  The score will be available, and an audition accompanist will be provided.  Call backs will include sung dialogue.  Audition candidates may bring their own sheet music, and should also bring a headshot or snapshot.  A resume is helpful, but not required.

 

Performances of Les Misérables will be held from July 24 through August 17, with show times at 7:30 or 8:00 pm from Wednesday through Saturday.  Sunday matinee performances will be held at 3:00 pm.
