Hingham Fireworks Expected to Be Larger This Year

The Hingham fireworks celebration is expected to be bigger and better this year, according to organizer Mark Casale.

Casale said the firework shells  will be larger compared to the ones from last year.   The reason is because the fireworks will be shot from Button Island which is larger area than the barge in the middle of the harbor where they shot from last year.

Casale is expecting over 20,000 people to attend the annual extravaganza, depending on the weather.

“It’s  the biggest show on the South Shore,” Casale said. “People come from all over.”

This year’s  fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m. and will be shot facing the Hingham Harbor Gazebo.  Casale said the area by the Gazebo will be the “premier spot,” to sit.

The celebration will begin at 3 p.m. with various kids’ events throughout downtown Hingham until 6 p.m.

The newest event will be a bicycle decorating contest at the Hingham Harbor Gazebo.  Children are invited to bring their bike to the event and decorate it.  Each bike will then be judged and awards will be given, Casale said.

“Each year we try to add something new to make the celebration better,” Casale said.

From 3-6 p.m. there will also be a band concert, face painting, a bouncy house, and balloon sculptures.  All the children’s’ activities are free.

At 6 p.m. there will be  Blues music from Lickity Split and at 7 p.m. there will be Patriotic music with the Satiut Band.

The fireworks will not begin until after dark at around 9:30 p.m.

Grilled summer foods and ice cold drinks will also be available for purchase.

The festivities were originally scheduled for June 29, but have been pushed back to July 6 due to rain.  The rain date will be July 7.

The event is funded by community donations.  To contribute, donations may be sent to:  Lions Club of Hingham, Massachusetts, Inc or Hingham Lions,
