New Hingham Playschool Gives Young Kids a Place to Explore Their Imaginations

Kid's Cove Playschool opened this past September for children ages 2-5-years old on Charles Street in South Hingham.

The school allows children to take part in enriching programs such as arts and crafts and games.  Kids Cove is designed for children, ages 2-4 and open weekday mornings from 8:45-11:45 a.m. It is licensed for up to 10 children per day by the Department of Early Education and Care.

The school was opened by Hingham mothers Michelle Magner and Julieanne Murtagh. Each have three children of their own.

Magner is a certified teacher who previously worked part-time at the Fluency Factory in Hingham for 8 years. Murtagh previously had her own day care center at her home.

New this summer, Kid's Cove Playschool will be running a summer camp for 2-3 year olds over a 2 week period in July 2013. Sign up and enrollment information is listed on their website, http://kidscoveplayschool.com.

Why did you decide to open Kid's Cove Playschool?

Magner: There wasn’t anything like this when my kids were younger and then we were seeing a need for it because a lot of similar places have wait-listings.

What success have you seen?

Murtagh: Every child that was coming once a week, is now coming twice a week.  Within the last month we have had new starters as well.

What separates your Playschool from similar child-care businesses in town?

Murtagh and Magner: We are not a daycare.  Kids can come one or more days a week. We follow the Hingham Public Schools calendar.  When they’re on vacation we’re on vacation. We start in September and end in June.

What can kids do here?

Murtagh and Magner: We do circle time, sing songs,  play, arts and craft, have snack time ,try to go outside for at least 30 minutes, and have a story time.  It’s cozy and homey.

Describe some of your arts and crafts projects?

Murtagh: We have a theme a month. Right now we are doing winter animals.  We have talked about hibernation and made that have to do with these animals. We are doing snowmen in the future. In September, we had an “Under the Sea” theme and made fish.  In the past we have done bird feeders. For each project we talk about the theme and have them learn something from it.

Anything else you want Hingham residents to know about this business?

Murtagh and Magner:  That if you bring your child here, they will be cared for.   We call this an enrichment program because we focus on enriching the toddlers.  We teach them how to make friends, share, have good manners, playing, exploring their imaginations and having fun.  It’s a fun place where kids can feel comfortable.

Is this school only for Hingham students?

Magner: No, any student is welcome. We have a lot of Norwell students and Hingham students.

How did you decide on the name Kids Cove?

Magner: We picked “Cove” because we think of beach fun, but because Hingham was originally named “Bare Cove,” we decided this is the Kids Cove.

Murtagh:  Kid's Cove Playschool provides a safe harbor for your children to play, learn and make new friends.
