Police: Hingham Participates in Tracking Program for Wanderers
The information follows a situation Wednesday in which a local man went missing in Hingham.
Hingham police are reminding resists of the department's participation in a Plymouth County Sheriff program for locating people prone to wandering after an elderly man went missing from the Hingham Shipyard Wednesday.
The 80-year-old man with Alzheimer's was found safe at the South Shore Country Club a short while later, but the incident "serves as an opportunity to remind residents of a service available to help track those at risk of wandering due to conditions such as autism, Alzheimer's, Down syndrome, dementia or other cognitive conditions," HPD said in an electronic alert.
"The program is run by the Plymouth County Sheriff's Department, in conjunction with local police departments (including Hingham PD) in Plymouth county," police said.
"It's called Safety Net by LoJack and involves trained law enforcement from throughout the county who use equipment to track those who have wondered away. through a monitoring bracelet worn by the resident.
"We support the use of this program as a life saving measure. There is a cost involved for monitoring equipment but we stress that family finances should not discourage those who may benefit from inquiring.
