Hingham Residents Outraged Over Construction to Cushing Street

Tina Randall, a resident and homeowner from the 200 block of Cushing Street said the recent construction completely closed off access to her home.

A Cushing Street resident is upset and annoyed over construction in front of her home last week that prevented her babysitter from driving to her house and an animal vet from delivering medicine to her pet.

Tina Randall, a resident and homeowner from the 200 block of Cushing Street said police and DPW workers completely closed off access to her Hingham home on Thursday morning.

Randall said the detail officers allowed residents to leave Cushing Street but when her babysitter and pet’s vet tried to drive to her home, they were not allowed on the road.

“I’ve never seen a street closed and officers not letting residents back into their home,” Randall said.  “People were desperate to get back into their home.  You could go out, but you weren’t allowed back in.”

Teresita Laque, who lives with Randall, missed her job interview because of the closure.

Laque was watching Randall’s young child and was unable to leave the home because the babysitter could not get to it.

“It was just annoying,” Laque said.

Harry Sylvester, an employee for the Hingham Department said there was only one lane open on Cushing Street, at the time of construction and to gain access to the home, residents had to drive around the detour.

He said resurfacing of Cushing Street began at 4:20 a.m. and ended before 6:30 a.m. to make it more convenient for morning commuters.

“There’s inconveniences that come with this, but we warn residents.”

In a notice to Hingham residents, the DPW informed commuters that they may experience minor travel delays during the time of construction.

Pavement and resurfacing on Cushing Street is expected to be finished this week while work on four other Hingham roads was expected to begin on Monday.
