“I fully support President Obama's reasonable gun control recommendations.  This is a very personal issue for me, as my cousin was shot to death in 1996.  He was shot nine times, and his daughter had to grow up without a father.  Far too many people have shared this fate over the past few years.  Too many sons and daughters have grown up without mothers & fathers, and too many parents have had to go on with life mourning the loss of their children.

The only F grade I’ve ever been proud of is the one I receive from the NRA, and I will continue to oppose their efforts to distort a national tragedy and shift the blame elsewhere.  In the House I will push for bills like the one proposed by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) that I have cosponsored, which would make substantial improvements to the current background check system and close loopholes that allow certain gun purchasers to avoid background checks altogether. I will carry this commitment with me to the United States Senate.”
