Mandatory Outdoor Water Restrictions in Place in Hingham

There is a new limit on water usage for irrigation systems in Hingham. Failure to comply could result in discontinuance of water service.

The Aquarion Water Company of Massachusetts initiated a mandatory outdoor water restrictions for residents of Hingham, Hull and North Cohasset as of Wednesday night.

With the recent heat wave, the company is asking customers to limit water usage for irrigation systems and sprinklers because the hot weather has driven a high demand for water.

According to a release from Aquarion, "Homes with even house number addresses can water before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. on even numbered days. Homes with odd numbered addresses can water before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. on odd numbered days."

The company is allowing hand-held hoses at any time.

Failure to comply with the mandatory restrictions will first result in a written warning.  Subsequent violations can result in the discontinuance of water service with termination and restoration fees ranging from $49.00 to $294.00 depending on the day of the week, time of day and holidays, according to Aquarion.

Aquarion recommends several ways to use water wisely to help in the water conservation effort:

  • Allow grass to grow longer -- taller grass shades itself, is healthier and requires less water.
  • Be careful not to allow irrigation water to fall on paved areas.
  • Use brooms or blowers, instead of water, to clean decks, driveways and sidewalks.
