See What the Herbert Foss Waterfront Park Could Look Like

Foss served in the US Navy and fought in the Spanish American War.

The Board of Selectmen will take up the idea of naming Hingham’s inner harbor “The Herbert L. Foss Waterfront Park" during its Thursday evening meeting.

The park would be adorned with a large monument, pictured above, in honor of Foss, a Medal of Honor recipient who served during the Spanish American War in 1898.

The Herbert L. Foss Naming Committee voted for the park on Dec. 30, according to the Boston Globe. That vote followed several other options that faced opposition, such as re-naming Town Hall after Foss.

In May of 1898, Foss and his shipmates snared the communications cable off the coast of northwest Cuba during the Spanish American War.

With great difficulty while under intense enemy fire the men pulled the cable up over the bow of their ship and proceeded to sever it, according to the town's description

Since many of his shipmates were wounded or killed in the process, Foss finished the job by cutting the cable with a hacksaw and was later honored for his acts of braveness.
